Go Emma, GO!
WHERE DOES EMMA GO?

1. Emma
GOES upstairs, but very slowly and cautiously... FOR NOW. Do you believe in putting protective gates up or letting them learn consequences?

2. Emma
GOES straight to the base of the television when "Baby Signing Times" is turned on. She loves seeing the other babies and already signs "baby" when the show starts. Have you taught your children baby signs? Do you think it helps with communication?

3. Emma
GOES to the bookshelf as soon as she is able to roam free on the ground. She likes to pull every single book off the shelf, inspect the cover and then throw it behind her. Nope, that would be silly to play with her MANY MANY toys, when she has books to grab. We still think it's cute, but I'm sure this will wear off. :)

4. Emma
GOES to play with the Christmas tree lights... even though Mom and Dad thought they were outsmarting her by putting it on the coffee table. That "guilty" face would get convicted in ANY court of law.

5. Emma
GOES to bed well, stays asleep well and generally wakes up pretty happy. Her closet is mirrored doors, so she loves to sit in her crib and talk to her reflection. It is so cute to hear her babbling through the monitor.

6. Emma
GOES around the furniture, once she pulls herself up. This is often a challenge, considering her 24 pounds of solid baby weight... but she does it like a champ.

7. Emma
GOES immediately toward paper when she spies it. Not sure if it is the noise or the colors that are appealing, but I have a feeling Christmas morning is going to be amazing for her. So much paper, so little time.

8. Emma
GOES with the super cool fashion trends of the early 2000's with J-LO and her mother. What? Baby blue velour isn't still HOT? We ran an errand right after this picture was taken and I made Greg hold Emma in the store, because I was a little embarrassed we were in matching outfits. :) This photo is for Lana. Now you know how much I love you.

9. Emma
GOES nuts when I get into the shower. SERIOUSLY nuts. She can play independently anywhere/anytime... but when I put her in my bedroom and shut the HORRIFYING shower curtain, she goes crazy on me. Screams her head off, and crawls right into the shower with me. Do your children do this? It really baffles me.

10. Emma
GOES to the bathroom on the tile floor, like a puppy. I'm not kidding. This is the real deal people. I was changing her diaper and the door bell rang, so I hopped up, chatted with my friend for LESS THAN TWO MINUTES and came back to this little puddle. On a positive note, she did not get my carpet and did not get it on herself. Just took a leak and kept on crawling. That's our girl!!
GO EMMA, GO!!

the last photo is my favorite. my babies have all been champion pee-ers. they like to wait till the diaper is off to let loose.
and shower alone? hasn't happened in 6 1/2 years. there is always a fully clothed kid trying to climb in with me.
ah, motherhood. how i love thee.
I am loving the Emma photo shoot and can't wait till you guys get to KY!
A word in Emma's defense:
2minutes?!? I don't think that it is possible for you to talk to a friend within 2 minutes. It was probably more like 10min. so I don't blame the poor girl:)
Love you!
First, I believe in a gate when I am not paying attention, no gate when I am close by to learn consequences (but gently).
Second, I have taught signs to all of my babies, and it definitely helps with communication. Even if all they know is eat, more, all done, milk, please and thank you they can at least communicate basic things with you, and they pick up signs so quickly that I think it helps ease some frustration.
Last, I love the velour sweat suits. We should bring those back!
Tammy, I'll never forget this gesture of love shown to me. Do you think it would be a bit much to try and find matching velour pantsuits for my whole family to wear in a Christmas photo? I mean, Porter and Dane could wear a mannish color like black or gray and Tatum and I could be a lovely girly lemon or raspberry. Don't take my idea! Anyway, love all the Emma pictures. So CUTE!
And PS, we're big fans of the gates, because as they get more brave, it's not always as graceful or safe as we'd like. Once, when my brother was watching him, he got brave and rolled down the stairs ... but he's also ALL boy. It also contains them. Want to be left alone for five minutes? close the gate and run away!
I totally made another comment before the PS one. Weird. It's gone. We still can't keep books on shelves or pee where it belongs. I think it just sort of changes ...
Cute post. And I didn't do any baby sign with my girls and I can tell you right now that they are NOT lacking in communicating AT ALL. I'm wondering if I would've done it if they would talk less. Maybe I should try it with Haley.
Cute post. I believe in baby sign. Both of my kids have signed Hunter since about 6 months Rissa since 9-10 months. Hunter is 2 1/2 and has a vocabulary of a 4 yo. Rissa 4 and has a vocabulary better than many first graders. They know lots of signs as my mom uses them. It's nice to use in church and they know Imean business. When I sign Sit now. But, we are an ASL family. It also provides great opportunities in the future. I love the velour suits and the puddle. I have to say my kids would Never do anything like that (yeah right). Emma is so cute!
Roman has been carrying your family christmas picture around most of the afternoon. He brought it up to me and I asked him where's Emma and he pointed to your daughter. I think he is in love:) Shall I go buy the wedding invitations now?
Yes gates and consequences-pick your moments. And yes to baby signs-Noah only picked them up later but it was a help when he started using them since his speech was delayed. On that note the SLP told us, and we verified for ourselves, that hand motions (especially in songs) and signs do encourage verbal communication since they are tied closely in the brain.
And while I can usually shower by myself I have not gone to the bathroom alone since Noah learned how to crawl!
I also had to laugh about the 'solid baby' since we have one too and it has definitely made things a little harder for him to get up standing too.
Straight from the 'hood, that's how you roll. Right? Loved the matching outfits. She is such a cute kid. And who has time to stop and do the bathroom thing the right way, especially when you can go on the go?
love the photos! emma is darling.
1. i think the gate should depend on how many stairs you have. my parents have stairs and we do not, and they are tall stairs, so we've been trying to keep grey away. better safe than sorry.
2. with jane we learned to sign hungry, thank you, and made up or modified signs for milk, night-night, and thirsty. it really helped her to be less frustrated, and us too. very helpful.
What a fun post! It sounds like she is busy and keeps you on your toes!
OK, #10 was my fave. That's just hysterical. And what makes it more funny is that you actually took a picture of the puddle. Love it! :) This is a great post.
Do you really want my opinion? Yes, for sure on baby gate. You would feel absolutely awful if you left the room for one minute and... She'll learn the stairs in her own time and get to be a pro, once she is then you can feel safe with the gate down.
Signing, allow you baby any method of communication possible. Ian didn't talk for forever and I worried, worried, worried. I wish I would have taught him some signs (although, with his personality, he still probably wouldn't have used them).
My opinion on things you didn't ask about: pulling stuff off shelves. We let Ian play with our DVD rack ever since he was little little. Now he will not leave it alone. I thought the novelty would wear off but he loves pulling ALL the DVDs off the shelf and then finds the perfect one and removes the DVD's from the case (leading Tyler to greatly worry that his precious DVD's will get scratched). If you want those books in good condition by the time she's two, best set up a boundary now.
I shower while Ian's still in his crib but doesn't know I'm up yet. Do I wake up before him? Heck no! I wait till I hear him, sleep for another 15 minutes, take a shower and then get him up. He usually has a toy in there and so he's good to go till I come get him. It's made the biggest difference in my day - getting ready before I get him up that is.
Ian peed on the floor today too. The fun never ends!
Gosh thanks for asking my opinion, I obviously love to share it whether it's sought or not! Good luck!
