Ready, Ready, Ready, Ready - Ready To Run

Dear (crazy) running friends,

I started running outside, on the open road (errr...sidewalk) last week. All went well, loved the change of scenery, but almost DIED of dehydration because I didn't bring water with me.

I have been running on the treadmill for so long, that I forgot I would not have a handy dandy cup holder close to my side once I left the comfort of my moving rubber slate.

How do you stay hydrated while you run? Camelbak? Water Bottle? Waist Pack? What do you prefer and why? And how much did "said item" cost you?

Please Help!

Parched and Puzzled,
Tammy

PS - I know it hurt a lot of you to hear that I really hate running, and I will update you to know that I now "tolerate" it. I still love biking and swimming WAY WAY WAY WAY more, but it's become like a loveable wart. I don't like that it's there, but since it's stuck, I've learned to deal.

Tamz, Girl! I have NEWS for you! You can burn much more fat and calories by doing workouts in your living room than you can by going for a jog. The key is interval training. That is where you rotate between aerobic (heart is beating quickly, you can still hold a conversation, but it's challenging) and anaerobic (you heart rate it near maximum - really intense, can't talk). Rotating between these two kills WAY MORE CALORIES and BURNS WAY MORE FAT.

My favorite program is turbo jam! It is so fun and the music is pumpin' and you really want to get up and move. I was doing turbo jam for a few months and then I went running w/some of the "runners" in the family. I could keep up just as well as any of them even though I hadn't "run" in a long time. I seriously think you should look into it! It just so happens that I just got a job as a fitness/nutritional coach! :) I'm very excited because it's become something I'm passionate about. Changing how I eat and working out has revolutionized my life, my attitude, my goals, what I go after (opportunities), and of course my body! :) So, I've been studying up for awhile so I can pass on the love. I'm also going to start teaching turbo jam at the gym later this year. :) If you want to look into turbo jam you'll find it at

I love running Tam! I love how I feel after I run farther each day. I used to "plant" my water on my route - or make sure I have a gas station on the way or run back to my house. I really hate running with a water bottle! I know that's probably not a good idea in AZ, but for me I can run 2 or 3 miles without water as long as I am hydrated before I start. Hope this helps!

I'm with Matt and Shauna (above), and don't run with h2o if it is just a few miles. It helps if you go at like 5 a.m. But, I have two camelbacks, and I like running with the smaller one. I can bring it to b.c. or something. Did I ever tell you the story of when I got dehydrated after a LONG run and passed out when I was at Big-O tires? It's a doosey. Anyway, we need to talk b/c I get headaches after I swim, and I wonder if it is because I'm dehydrated? Who knows?

You go girl!! So did you already do the triathlon? When I run if I stick to 2 - 4 mile runs, I never bring water! I get cramps when I drink while running. So yeah stay hydrated beforehand and drink a lot when you get back! :) good luck girlie! Exercise is fabulous and I luuurve those endorphines!

I usually run anywhere between 3-5 miles and I never take water with me. I hate running with it. When I did do a half marathon I did have a water belt with about 3 or 4 little bottles on the belt. I got it for Christmas but I doubt they are too expensive. During the race they have water stops so I usually rely on those.

Here is my 2 cents. I hate to carry water, but I will if I have to. In Tempe it is nice, because there is a gas station on just about every major intercetion, they usually don't mind you stopping in for a quick cup of water (or a few icecubes, to throw down your sports bra as you run away!) If I go over 3 miles I usually carry a camelback, it was my true companion while training for a marathon through the summer. Much better than listening to water slosh around in a bottle.

I am in no way experienced as these people who posted previously...but my runner hubby has about a billion water troughs, bottles and thingies that like to clutter my house. Feel free to borrow to find out which kind you like and that may help you in your purchase decision.

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but I'll tell you that I'm on the same page as most everyone here. I carried a water bottle on a jog I did in July that ended up being 6 miles! I was glad I had it--even though it was annoying to run with. But I'm not exactly sprinting, so it's no big deal to hold it. However, I haven't been taking water with me when I go really early in the morning if it's five miles or less. But I want a water belt with tiny water bottles on it. Roadrunner Sports (I think) at the tempe marketplace has all sorts of equipment like that. :)

I say stick to the treadmill until it cools off to 80. That is my solution.

hahaaaha!!!! I'm laughing and you know why. :)
Ya know what, about the WATER (which is the topic of conversation)...
If you do get dehydrated while you're running (if you're thirsty you've waited too long) then your potential for energy and burning cals goes down the drain!
So really, you'll get used to it. When I run with a water bottle I'm just switching off hands every now and then. And my biceps get some tone! yaaaaah.
hey ps you look gorgeous in those pics of JJ's shower. lovely ladies!

Not like you'd know it by looking at me but I've been a runner most of my life. I too am in the camp of those who run before the sun comes up. It's cooler, the world is still pretty and new at that hour and thre are few people to gawk at my chubby self jiggling around! If you don't like a morning run, try gatorade gum. It keeps your mouth moist without giving you a side ache.

We got a waist belt. I run holding a water bottle for short runs sometimes, but I sometimes get sick of holding something. I can't imagine running with a backpack, I think you would feel so much more sweaty and gross. I vote for the waist belt. I think we paid under $50 for it.

I bottle in each hand is how I rolled. Water and gatorade and made sure there were some gas stations along the way to refill. I cannot run without water....I would die. Holding them really isn't that bad. You get used to it after awhile and that way you don't have an annoying thing bouncing on your waste or back also making you sweat more in those areas!!! Happy running...I don't like it either. :)
